GAVIN WATCHED NIKKI walk away with the gallery owner before he began wandering around, looking this way and that for any indication that Perry Evigan had made his way to the art gallery. Admittedly, it seemed like a giant leap to believe that the fugitive serial killer would actually have the wherewithal to track Nikki down in this location, at this time. But Gavin had been in law enforcement and corrections long enough to know that hardened and tenacious criminals could never be underestimated. That was certainly true for Evigan, who had managed to strangle to death ten women without being caught, before he finally had the hammer dropped on him.

The man had walked away from a maximum-security prison farm and remained on the loose for days, while his fellow escapees had perished in a fire. That alone told Gavin that Evigan was not one to be taken lightly, no matter the odds against his taking another shot at Nikki.

As a result, Gavin found himself checking out anyone and everyone who was anywhere near Nikki, while maintaining a good enough distance to allow her to bask in her success as a local artist. I don’t want to see Evigan spoil her showing by trying to take Nikki out, Gavin told himself. She’d paid a high enough price for her earlier victimization by him. Not to mention, witnessing the sexual assault and murder of her best friend. Gavin would not allow Nikki to go through that again—so long as he was able to stick around and protect her while her attacker was out there.

He moved beyond the perimeter to see if anyone else matching the serial killer’s general description came into view. Nothing. Breathing a sigh of relief, Gavin continued to walk around and took out his cell phone. He called Special Agent Jean O’Reilly. She picked up immediately. “Hey,” he told her. “Any news on Perry Evigan and his whereabouts...?”

“The assumption is still that he’s headed for Mexico,” she reported. “But I’m not so sure about that. Evigan, who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else—and seemed to spend much of his time in prison educating himself even more—doesn’t strike me as someone who would be happy spending the rest of his life south of the border.”

Gavin had the same thought, but asked, “What about the material on Guadalajara found in Evigan’s cell?”

“From what I understand, it belonged to his cellmate, José Contreras, another convicted murderer, who came to this country as an illegal immigrant sex trafficker, by way of Guadalajara.”

“Hmm...” Gavin muttered. “So, Evigan could pretty much be headed or hiding anywhere.” Even in Owl’s Bay, Gavin thought, but tried to push that notion away.

“True,” Jean said, “but it appears that he might be moving toward the Midwest, or farther away from Mississippi. The white Chevrolet Malibu Evigan was believed to have been driving was found abandoned in Arkansas. Someone matching his description was reportedly spotted in Indiana.”

Maybe he isn’t anywhere near Owl’s Bay, Gavin thought, glancing about at the art lovers who showed up.
